MADURA TOURISM IN GENERAL
Madura is my beloved home town.
Madura Island is part of East Java that needs a better access. Madura that consist of four regencies has a lot to offer.These are Bangkalan, Sampang, Pamekasan and Sumenep. It has excellent quality of agriculture outputs and beautiful tourism objects and more. The presence of the bridge had expected to improve smoother flow of people, goods and service from and into this island. Mayor impacts had expected to emerge from this facility, be it socially and economically. The Suramadu Bridge that connects Surabaya and Madura Island has expected to complete in 2007, extending 5.43 km with 28.10 m width.
The sea crossing from East Java to the small island of Madura takes just half an hour. Measuring about 160 km in length and about 40 across at it s widest point, Madura support a population of close to 3 million inhabitants, most of whom are farmers or fisherman.
The most famous attraction of this island is the annual bull racing (kerapan sapi), which takes place during the dry season in August – September. These exiting and colourful tournaments consist of a race between two pairs of bulls, each team pulling a rider and sled. Then, the finals are held in Madura’s capital, Pamekasan on October. The interesting part of this attraction is when a rider stands on the ‘Keleles’, yelling and slamming while his hands hold two sticks and slap the bull’s weight and attached to the bulls. A pair of male cow races each other in 200 m length or known with Kerapan Sapi. Madurese always hold this race yearly from sub district level, district, and finally to get a President Cup. This tradition has done for so long and it is a symbol to thank to God by cow breeders in Madura. Brown cow, a Madurese cow which is always in the race, tourist also can notice Sapi Kereman, to enjoy how Madurese takes care of their cows. It is the interesting part, begins with how the Madurese graze the cows, take care of the cow’s health with traditional herbs and train the cow about running. In the middle of Kerapan Sapi, there is an additional attraction “Sapi Sono”. It is a female bull contest.
A narrow road runs the whole along Madura’s attractive north coast, from Slopeng to Bangkalan. There are many small villages and quite beaches on the way, in particular the fishing communities of Pasongsongan and Pasean, where the estuaries have packed with colourful sailing boats. Near to Bangkalan there is Aermata tomb of Ratu Ibu, which dates back to the mind 17 century. The tomb set on a hill about 4 km inland the town of Arosbaya. Madura has well known for its Batik Textile production and has its own unique style in the performing art; the island is famous for its Topeng Dalang, a mask dance / theatre, which at one time had only seen within the royal palace. Most popular Batik is at Tanjungbumi, Bangkalan.
BANGKALAN TOURISM
Calm, tranquillity and natural place
There are several tourism objects in Bangkalan, such as : Rongkang Beach, Sambilangan Beach, Geger hill tourism, Cholil bin Abdul Latif Grave, Aer mata grave, Bull Racing, The anchient museum, Traditional artistry. Kinds of traditional artistry are : Moang Deny Dance, Angklung Mask Dance, Rokat Dance, Keraban Dance, Fisherman Dance, Buggy Dance, Blandaran Dance, Calibrated ‘ Month Dance, Fisherman Dance, Sholawat Prophet Dance, Nyello ‘ Aeng Dance, Reng Majangan Dance, Hadrah Jidor Artistry, Salaban ( Sandur Madura) Artistry in all (18) districts.
SAMPANG TOURISM
Pure and natural place
Sampang is one of Madura’s regency that has many kinds tourism object. Sampang is a tropical area, so that it is comfortable for the tourist to enjoy the tourism objects. There are many kinds of tourism objects in Sampang, such as : Mandangin island tourism spot, Camplong beach, Madengan tomb, recreation of Klampis reservouir, Toroan waterfall, the ruin Raden Segoro, ruins of Pababaran. Those tourism objects, is become the main icon of Sampang regency. The others are :
Bamboo Braid. The tourists can this Bamboo braid at Pengongsean village, Torjun district, Sampang regency; Sejati village, Camplong district, Sampang regency; Lapelle village, Robatal district, Sampangregency; Tobai Timor village, Sokabanah district, Sampang regency.
Pandan / Mendong Braid. The Pandan Braid can found at Jolotundo village, Jetis district, Sampang regency; Banyukopoh village, Kedungdung district, Sampang regency.
Batik. The location of Batik are; Gunung Sekar village, Sampang district, Sampang regency; Kotah village, Jrengik district, Sampang regency.
PAMEKASAN TOURISM
Peaceful, pure and pleasant place
Pamekasan regency lies between Sampang regency (southward) and Sumenep regency (eastward). Whereas, north side is restricted by the Java sea and south side by the Madura strait. Pamekasan is the Madura’s capital is just 33 km east of Sampang. Handmade Batik from this regency has its own design among Madura’s batik. Take a visit to Proppo village to see batik making. Nature resource is located less than 600 meter from main road Sampang-Pamekasan.
Whereas, the natural resources potentials economically are very promising for us to be developed among other things: Plantation, Agriculture, Animals Husbandry, Sea and Fishery, Industry, Mining, Culture and Tourism Potentials. Some of tourism objects in Pamekasan are : Bull Racing, Talang Siring Beach, Jumiang Beach, The Eternal Flame, Batu Ampar, Typical Dance of Pamekasan, Industry Potential. The industry potential in this regency such as: plantation potential (tobacco, herb-chili), agriculture potentials orange, animal husbandri potential the brooding cow, sea and fishery potentials (salt, seaweed, small sea fish), industry potential (the writing batik, madurese herb, phosphate stone).
THE CHARMING OF SUMENEP
Sumenep regency divide into several sub district, each sub district has unique tourism object. The sub distrcts are :
Sumenep City Sub District
The tourism objects are :Great Mosque, Adipura Park, Museum and Kraton of Sumenep, Asta Tinggi Cemetery.
Sumenep Great Mosque is listed in the center of the city. It is exactly infront of Taman Adipura (Adipura Park) and on the left of it is the building of regional consultative body. The Mosque was built by Tumenggung Arya Noto Kusumo I which known as Panembahan Sumolo in the year of 1763. The style of its building was influenced by Islamic, China and Europe architecture.
Kalianget Sub District
The tourism objects are : Fort Sumenep, Kalianget Port
Fort Sumenep was built of bricks and has a square ground plan with two entrances, one on the north side and the other on the south side. On each corner is a bastion. The walls are 5 m thick. One bastion is connected to another by a 5 m width rampart. The surviving segment of the fort include its surrounding wall, two gateways, and a jail house and a magazine in the interior. This fort is now converted into a holding ground of the Small Animal Husbandry Development Project. With its new function, on the inside as well as outside of the fort a number of buildings for animal stables and guard houses have been built. Outside the fort on the west side is Dutch cemetery dating from 1933.
Talango Sub District
Asta Yusuf Grave is one of tourism objects in this sub distrct.
Saronggi Sub District
Keris Home Industry and The nyadar traditional ceremony become object tourism that offered by this region.
At Saronggi sub-district there is a home industry of making Keris (a wavy double bledded dagger). This home industry is in Aengtongtong village about three kilometers to the west and two kilometers to the north. Keris is a kind of dagger believe to have magic power. Therefore, in the last time, not all people could make Keris except a man called Mpu (Master Keris Maker). It is now regarded as usual dagger but because its form is unique and interesting it is loved by many people. The Aengtongtong Keris product has been sold to the big cities in Indonesia like Surabaya and Jakarta. It has also been sold in other countries like Malaysia, Singapore and Holland.
Bluto Sub District
There is Batik Home Industry
Madura is also popular of its Batik. One of Batik home industries in Madura is Batik " Melati " from Pekandangan Barat - Bluto sub-district Sumenep Regency. Pekandangan Barat is a center of Batik Home Industry located about 10 kilometers north of Sumenep. Madura batik has different characteristic to Java’s especially its colour. Madura Batik has usually a clear and strong colour like red, green and yellow with bird, flower and dragon as the motif.
